Hertha Schroeder

November 29, 1918 — January 19, 2012

Hertha Schroeder was born November 29, 1918, the daughter of John and Catherine Sonnichsen Petersen. She passed away Thursday, January 19, 2012, at the Manilla Manor in Manilla, Iowa, at the age of ninety-three.
Hertha was born in Denison, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ on April 9, 1954, and confirmed the following Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla, Iowa. She received her education in country schools near her home. Hertha was united in marriage to Henry Schroeder at the Lutheran parsonage in Harlan, Iowa, on January 15, 1936, and to this union three children were born. The couple farmed north of Aspinwall, Iowa, for thirty-eight years before retiring in Manilla, Iowa. In 1996 they moved to a home in Denison, Iowa.
Hertha was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She made her childrens childhood memorable and fun, playing along side them and sledding with them in the snow. She enjoyed cooking and baking, specializing in bread and bars. Her grandchildren looked forward to the care packages of goodies she would send them at college as she would have fun with them too by attaching their names with rhyming words. She also loved to socialize with the neighbors, play cards and Yahtzee, and read. Hertha had both vegetable and flower gardens and liked to watch the birds and squirrels outside. Dances at the Columbia Hall in Denison were special times for Hertha and Henry as they would go dancing, especially enjoying the Eddie Skeets polka band. She was a forthright and very punctual person. Hertha was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla.
Hertha was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry in 1998; two sons-in-law, Howard and Jim; one grandson, Dan in 1979; three brothers: Ben, Herman, and Marvin; seven sisters: Caroline, Clara, Hilda, Leona, Helen, Nellie, and Edna. Survivors include two daughters, Deloris; Margaret; one son, Roger and his wife, Diane; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
