Irene Bumann, age 100, passed away September 19, 2020.
She was born on December 19, 1919 to Heinrich and Marie (Kuhlman) Geise in Kohlstadt Germany. She was baptized, confirmed and educated in Germany. Irene came to the United States on October 11, 1938 at the age of 18.
On July 22, 1951, Irene was united in marriage to Robert Bumann at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig. The couple made their home in Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of one son. In 1958, she was awarded citizenship in the United States and that was a very proud moment for Irene.
She worked for Bill’s Market from 1938-1962 until Irene and Robert owned and operated the Schleswig Locker from 1962-1972 and stayed employed there until their retirement in 1987. Irene was a devoted and faithful member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, where she was a member of Ladies Guild.
After retirement, Irene loved to garden and plant flowers. She loved her family more than anything and she was very devoted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In June of 2015, Irene moved into the Morningside Care Center where she was blessed to have her 2 grandchildren and one great-grandson working there.
In addition to her parents, Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Bumann; 7 brothers; 2 sisters; great-great-grandson, Joseph Steven Behrendsen.
She is survived by her son, Dennis Bumann (Saundra) of Schleswig; 3 grandchildren, Allison Behrendsen (Dustin) of Schleswig, Carrie Landon (Michael) of Ida Grove and Greg Bumann (Jessica) of Glenwood, Iowa; 10 great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Dustin James "DJ" (Kaci), Austin and Derrick Behrendsen, Jarrett Bumann, Samantha Landon, Olivia, Joshua, Thomas and Kaitlyn Bumann; 1 great-great- granddaughter, Harlee Behrendsen; sister, Louise Geise of Council Bluff, Iowa; a host of other relatives and friends.
Masks and social distancing are strongly recommended to all guests who attend Irene’s services.
