James Phillip Hamblen was born January 22, 1947, in Denison, Iowa, the son of James and Cecilia Hamblen. He died at the Denison Care Center Sunday, December 25, 2016, at the age of sixty-nine.
Phil, as he was known, graduated from Kuemper High School in Carroll with the class of 1965. After completing his education, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1966, serving his country at Travis Air Force Base, California, where he served as an aircraft log clerk in the Pacific Air Command Theatre with the 27150 Air Operations Squadron. He received an honorable discharge in 1972. He worked in Des Moines for a short time before beginning his 38- year career with Farmland Foods, starting at Crete, Nebraska, then in Iowa Falls and then in Denison from which he retired.
He was united in marriage to Barb Wieland on July 16, 1977, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The couple was blessed with the birth of two daughters. His memberships included St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. His interests included: serving on the 4-H youth committee, gardening, socializing over coffee at the coffee shop in Denison, watching television and listening to classical country music especially the Oak Ridge Boys. He also enjoyed grilling at football games and attending the Crawford County Fair where he enjoyed looking at the livestock. John Deere equipment was also a favorite of his. When he was in good health, he enjoyed walking his dogs.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include: his wife, Barb; two daughters: Susan and her husband, Mark, and Beth; one sister, Carol and her husband, Cam; other relatives and friends.
