Janice Marie Ferry, born April 13, 1940, at home in Manning, Iowa, was the daughter of Frederick and Florence (Sanders) Jensen. She was baptized and confirmed at the First Presbyterian Church in Manning, where her faith would remain an important part of her life.
Janice attended school in Manning and graduated with the Class of 1958. A proud member of the high school band, she played the flute and served as a band majorette. She was also honored with a drama award—an achievement she treasured. It was during high school that Janice met Galen Ferry, who worked with her brother Glen Jensen and brother-in-law Gerald Schroeder at J & S Feed Service in Manning. After graduating in May 1958, Janice married Galen on August 24 of that year at the First Presbyterian Church in Manning.
The couple briefly lived in Harlan before moving to Denison. After Galen completed basic training, they returned to Manning, where they welcomed their two children, Sheila and Todd, completing their family. In 1969, they moved to Schleswig, and in 1972, settled in town. There, Janice assisted with the bookkeeping for Schinco, Inc. Janice and Galen made their home near the edge of the golf course, a location they loved. They especially enjoyed spending winters in Arizona and summers at their cabin in Lake View.
Janice was a devoted member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, where she served in many roles, including Sunday and Bible School teacher, Bell Choir member, investment committee member, and Girl Scout leader. She also served on the Schleswig Public Library Board and the Ladies Schleswig Golfer Board. She was an avid reader and a lover of tea, passions she embraced throughout her life. Janice also enjoyed playing cards in clubs with friends and was a regular in the Thursday night bowling leagues.
Janice passed away at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City having attained the age of 84 years, 11 months and 30 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick and Florence Jensen; husband, Galen Ferry; brother, Glen (Lenore) Jensen; sisters: Joyce (Gerald) Schroeder, Donna (Marlon) Hansen, Ellen (Jack) Rasmussen, and Arlene (Henry) Sinow; and brother-in-law, Loren Ferry.
She is survived by daughter, Sheila Ferry of Schleswig; son, Todd (Chris) Ferry of Sioux City; grandchildren: Matt (Breanna) Ferry of Solon, IA, Paxton (Troy) Cutler of Sioux City, and Lexis (Trey) Morgan of Sioux City; great-grandchildren: Owen, Keely, and Quinn Cutler, and Lenox, Hendrick, and Hayes Morgan; sister, Phyllis (Richard) Tow of Minneapolis, MN; sisters-in-law, Marla (Larry) Crane of Overland Park, KS and Jeanette Ferry of Manilla; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
