Janis Dixon

February 21, 1952 — December 12, 2024

Janis Elaine Dixon was born on February 21, 1952, the daughter of Melvin and Mary Ellen (Wulf) Dixon in Carroll, Iowa. Janis was baptized and confirmed at the United Church of Christ in Westside, where she nurtured her deep faith throughout her life. She graduated from AR-WE-VA schools in 1970, then continued her education at Northwest Missouri State University, earning both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree.

Janis dedicated her career to teaching, where she shared her passion for mathematics with students for many years. She began her teaching career in Hamburg, Iowa, before relocating to Coon Rapids, where she spent a significant part of her career. Later, she taught at various schools in Des Moines, including Dowling Catholic and Des Moines Area Community College, retiring after a rewarding and impactful career.

Outside of her professional life, Janis enjoyed a variety of hobbies. She was an avid crocheter, often crafting gifts for family and friends. She had a passion for antiquing, often purchasing vintage pieces, then carefully stripping and refinishing them to restore their original beauty. Janis also loved to bake, especially her famous sugar cookies and her mother’s ice cream cake, a beloved family recipe. She enjoyed watching crime shows and had a deep love for reading, especially mysteries and thrillers that kept her engaged and entertained.

Janis passed away at the age of 72 years, nine months, and 21 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Marleen Dixon; and her niece, Nicole Bradley.

She is survived by her sisters: Vicki (Rick) Bradley of Des Moines and Terri Ramold of Omaha, Nebraska; four nephews: Chad (Shawna) Bradley of Carroll, Troy (Heather) Bradley of Des Moines, James Ramold of Omaha, Nebraska, and Jonathan Ramold of Omaha, Nebraska; great-nephews and great-nieces: Dylan, Gage, Caleb, Skye, Kyler, Peyton, Myles, and Grahm; great-great-nephew, Walker; two uncles: Frank (Rafaela) Wulf of California and Charles (Shelly) Wulf of Beaumont, Texas; along with other family members and friends.

Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 16, 2024, with visitation from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., all at the Huebner Funeral Home in Westside. Burial will follow in the Westside Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family for a scholarship to be established at Northwest Missouri State University in Janis’s name, a lasting tribute to her dedication to education.
