Jean Ellis

July 8, 1928 — August 29, 2024

Jaqueline, more affectionately known as Jean, Ellis was born on July 8, 1928, the daughter of Byron and Marie Caroline (Bartels) Schwitzer in Denison, Iowa. Her family moved to Sac City where she received her education and graduated from Sac City High School with the class of 1946. She then went on to graduate from the University of Iowa with a bachelor's degree in education.

In her high school years, Jean met Delmar DJ “Buck” Ellis, and their bond blossomed into a beautiful marriage after completing their college education. The couple married on June 27, 1948, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sac City, and they were blessed with one son, Jay. Jean and Buck's journey took them from Sac City to Lake View, then to Omaha, and finally to Denison.

Throughout her lifetime, Jean embarked on a fulfilling career as a kindergarten teacher, pouring her heart into the education of young minds for over 35 years. Her love for teaching did not end with her retirement; she continued to share her passion for learning through substitute teaching in the area for the next 40 years.

A devoted member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Jean's faith was a guiding light throughout her life. Jean also found joy in her membership at the Denison Country Club, where she cherished the camaraderie of friends and spent countless hours on the golf course. The sport brought her joy and numerous friendships, particularly through her time spent golfing with the local ladies. She also enjoyed her time as a member of Bridge Club.

Later in life, Jean made the heartfelt decision to move to Maui, Hawaii. This was not merely a change of scenery but a deliberate choice to be closer to her son and grandson. Her move allowed her to enrich their lives, helping to raise her grandson and creating beautiful memories that will be treasured by her family forever.

Jean passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at Gracewell, an Eventide Community in Denison at the age of 96 years, one month and 21 days.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; husband, DJ “Buck”; sister, Joan Simpson; brother, Byron Schwitzer; and great-niece, Kristin (Haase) Webb. She is survived by her son, Jay Ellis of Kihei, Hawaii; grandson, Byron Ellis of Santa Monica, California; sister, Mary Weresh of Atlantic; niece, Debra (Douglas) Haase of Denison; great-niece, Jessica (Ayax) Rangel of Aurora, Illinois; other nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
