Joan Deloris Hiles

Joan Deloris Hiles was born on July 2, 1931, to Ervin Dow and Mae (Anderson) Bates in Huron, South Dakota. She attended school in South Dakota. In her 50's, Joan went back to school and graduated from Faust Hair School in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Joan was united in marriage to Wilford "Bill" Hiles on August 28, 1950 in Pipestone, Minnesota and three daughters were born to this union: Mary, Linda, and Joni. The family relocated to Vail in 1960. The couple divorced in 1975.

Over the years, Joan owned and operated Joanie's Lounge and Gra-Ma's Beauty Bar both in Denison. She also worked in the deli and making pizzas at Hy-Vee and then as a greeter at Wal-Mart, retiring after 18 years.

Joan met Norbert "Norb" Roecker and the couple spent over 27 years together and enjoyed traveling. Joan cherished her family more than anything. In her spare time, Joan enjoyed gambling, cooking, baking and canning. She was a very social person and was known for her red lipstick and painted nails.

Joan passed away at Gracewell Eventide Lutheran Home on Tuesday, August 30, 2022 at the age of 91 years, one month and 28 days. She was a resident there for over 12 years. Her loving caregivers became part of her family and gently helped through her Dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Helen Sammons, Maxine Broer, Elaine Cochran, Marvis Lux, and Janice Wenker; and brother, Jerry Bates; life companion, Norb Roecker; and the father of her three daughters, Wilford "Bill" Hiles.

She is survived by her three daughters: Mary (Randy) Bruhn of Carroll, Linda (Ricky) Petersen of Denison, and Joni (Todd) Slechta of Denison; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Margaret Bates of Vancouver, Washington; and many other relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with the funeral service starting at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 5, 2022, all at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Private inurnment with the family will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. Memorials may be directed to the family.
