John Andrew Dieter was born July 25, 1927, the son of John Raymond and M. Loretta Holland Dieter. He passed away at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa, on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at the age of 84.
John was born in Carroll, Iowa. He attended St. Anns Catholic School in Vail, Iowa, graduating with the class of 1945. John joined the U.S. Navy on July 23, 1945, and received his honorable discharge on June 29, 1946. He was united in marriage to Theresa Graham on August 21, 1950, at St. Anns School Chapel in Vail, Iowa, and this union was blessed with the birth of ten children. John and Theresa farmed for 40 years before retiring and moving into Vail in 1990.
John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a faithful lifetime member of St. Anns Catholic Church in Vail and was a man of strong faith. John was also a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus in Carroll and the American Legion in Vail. He enjoyed visiting with his family and his neighbors, playing cards, and helping out on the family farm running errands when needed.
John was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Leota; and one grandson, Matthew. Survivors include his wife, Theresa; three sons: Tony and his wife, Deborah; Paul and his wife, Debra; and Michael and his wife, Lisa; seven daughters: Mary and her husband, Mike; Teri; Laurie and her husband, Kenny; Ann and her husband, Jim; Joleen and her husband, Dale; Kathleen and her husband, Doug; and Jennifer and friend Peter; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Earl and his wife, Sharon; and one sister-in-law; Mary; other relatives and friends.
