John "Jack" Powers

John “Jack” Robert Powers, Sr. was born December 4, 1926, in Vail, Iowa, the son of Leonard and Mary Powers. He passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2019, at his home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of ninety-two.
Jack received his education at the St. Ann Catholic Academy in Vail, Iowa. On December 30, 1952, he was united in marriage to Rita Loew at St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail, Iowa. The couple was blessed with the birth of seven children. Jack was involved with farming and was a cattle buyer his entire life, even buying cattle up until the last year. He enjoyed watching the cattle market and driving around looking at his cattle. He owned the sale barn in Irwin for fifteen years, from 1960 until 1975. Jack was semi-retired and moved to Denison in 1976.
Playing poker, going to Las Vegas and watching the game show network on television were his favorite activities. He also enjoyed watching his grandkids at sporting events. Having coffee and socializing with his friends at Cronks brought him much pleasure. He was a loving and kind father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rita in 2011; one grandson, Jeremy; two brothers, George and Joe; four sisters, Rosalie, Catherine, Jean and Nancy. Survivors include: four sons: John; James; Nick; and Tom and his wife, Sherry; three daughters: Mary Ann and her husband DeRyan; Patricia and her husband, Kenard; and Gerri Ann and her husband, Keith; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four sisters, Sally; Joan and her husband, Don; Mary Carol; and Jane; other relatives and friends.
