Johann “John” Ludwig Poggensee was born February 27, 1928, in Westside, Iowa, the son of Herman and Elsie Poggensee. He passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2018, at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of ninety.
John was baptized in Christ June 3, 1928, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, and later confirmed his faith there on April 2, 1944. He received his education in the Denison Community Schools. John entered the United States Air Force in May of 1946 and took his training as a radar observer at Boco Air Force Base in Florida. He spent two years at Yokota Air Force Base in Japan before receiving his honorable discharge in May of 1949.
He was united in marriage to Alma Woebke at Zion Lutheran parsonage on October 7, 1951. The couple made their home in Denison and were blessed with four children: Jimmy, Charles, Sandra and Diane.
Along with being a life-time member of the V.F.W., John was employed at Farm Service Coop and Lengling Meat Locker before he began a seventeen-year career as a meter reader for the Denison Municipal Utilities. He enjoyed family time together and looked forward to weekends when the grandchildren would be home. He also enjoyed feeding the squirrels for many years.
Preceding him in death were a son, Jimmy in infancy; his parents, Herman and Elsie Poggensee; his parents-in-law, William and Helen Woebke; three sisters, Louise Poggensee in infancy, Minnie Laubscher and Alvina Schiernbeck; one brother, Walter Poggensee; brothers- in -law: Earl Lilleholm, Clarence Schierneck, Herman Woebke in infancy, Willie Woebke, Albert Woebke, Marvin Woebke, Alvin Woebke, Melvin Ladwig, Albert Adams, and Robert Klink; sisters-in-law, Stephanie Poggensee, Lorraine Woebke, Marilyn Woebke, Joann Woebke, and Berniece Woebke. Survivors include: his wife of 66 years, Alma; one son, Charles Poggensee and his wife, Joyce of Harlan; two daughters, Sandra Kennedy and her husband, Wayne, and Diane Poggensee and special friend, Pat Brosnahan all of Denison; four grandchildren: Michael Poggensee and his wife, Cayley, and Daniel Poggensee and his wife, Cheri, all of Harlan, Carissa Kennedy of Durham, NC, and Tom Poggensee and his wife, Danielle of Ankeny; seven great-grandchildren: Lucy, Jacob, Asher, Camiryn, Emmett, Hunter and Hazel Poggensee; seven brothers: Ernest, Edward, Robert (Margie), Louis, Arnold, Donald (Pam) and Herman (Jackie); brothers -in-law; LaVerne Laubscher and Walter Woebke; sisters-in-law, Florence Poggensee, Helen Woebke, Helen Ladwig, Frieda Adams, and Betty Klink; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
