Joe was born on July 15, 1922, in Westside to Edward Patrick and Mary Ann (Lawler) White. He grew up on the White family farm located five miles north of Westside. The Century Farm was established in 1875. He grew up one of six children.
Joe attended grade school at Jackson #7 Country School, and he graduated in 1941 from St. Ann's Academy in Vail. After graduating, he farmed with his father, played baseball in Vail, and spent some time during the winter months with his uncle in Omaha; he boxed in the Gold Gloves in his spare time.
White served in the US Army during WWII from 1945 to 1947. He attended training at Camp Hood, Texas, and served in Naples, Italy, in the Motor Vehicle Dispatch Department. He was Honorably Discharged from the US Army on January 19, 1947. He then returned to Westside to continue farming.
On February 13, 1950, he was united in marriage to Helen Ann Healy at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Vail. The couple settled on the White family farm north of Westside. They were blessed with three children.
In addition to crop farming, he operated a cow/calf business and eventually finished out cattle for many years before retiring from farming in 1988. At that time, he and Helen moved to Carroll, living there until the time of his death. While in Carroll, he was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, and he was devoted strongly to his faith. Joe enjoyed golfing and doing woodworking projects, and he was always known to be a great "fixer" of almost anything. Joe was very proud of his Irish heritage, and he and members of his family made several trips to Ireland throughout his lifetime. He and close family friends always had a great time playing cards and finding any opportunity to have a bit of fun.
Joseph is preceded in death by his wife Helen; his parents; five brothers and sisters: Melvin, Pearl Williams, Jack, Esther, and Fr. Lloyd White; and daughter Ann Nelson.
Survivors include his son James White and his wife, Peggy of Westside; daughter Colleen Rossiter and her husband, Lyle of Westside; son-in-law John Nelson; four grandchildren: Matt Lujano (Jenna) of Carroll, Maureen White Beck (Bill) of Carroll, Hannah Rossiter Heiman (Eric) of Westside, and Joseph Rossiter of Westside; six great-grandchildren: Benicio and Giada Lujano, Liam and Mara Beck, and Huxley and Ellee Heiman; along with many nieces and nephews.
