Joyce W. Thies

Joyce Wardine Thies was born June 1, 1923, the daughter of Ward and Carolyn Holman. She died, Thursday, April 21, 2016 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of ninety-two.
Joyce was born in Omaha, Nebraska. She was baptized in Christ on December 15, 1923 and confirmed January 30, 1944. At a young age she moved with her family to California for a short time before moving back to Iowa with her mother. She received her education in the Denison Community Schools and graduated from the Denison High School with the class of 1941. Subsequent to high school, Joyce attended Normal School, receiving her teaching certificate. She taught in rural schools for three years. She was united in marriage to Walter Thies August 27, 1944 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by Rev. C.W. Schmidt.
Joyce was a devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church, their Ladies Aid and was a charter member of the Evening Guild, also known as LWML and taught Sunday School for seventeen years. She was also a member of Eventide Auxiliary and several card clubs that meet monthly. She and Walter enjoyed square dancing, camping in Iowa and traveling, especially to Alaska. In her leisure time she enjoyed crafts, going to garage sales and auctions where she was known to be a spirited and competitive bidder. Joyce was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family.
Joyce is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter; one son, Donald; one daughter-in-law, Mary; one great-grandson, Jordan; and one great-granddaughter, Lori . Survivors include: one son, Larry and two daughters, Linda and her husband, Steve and Darlene; twelve grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; one sister, Arlene; other relatives and many friends.
