Kary Jon Reis was the lastborn of six children...and was delivered to this life at Denison by his mother on her 32 nd birthday, December 20. His parents, Vernon and Darlene Swanson Reis, lived south of Denison on Hwy 59 where all those curves are, with the creek running through their pasture.
Kary had three big sisters: Kim, Kathy, and Kristie, and two big brothers: Kevin and Kelly. He was so blest to grow up on a small farm...there were always a dog and a few cats to play with. Oh, there were some cows to milk, too, and those newborn calves, and a barn with hay inside, and a few other outbuildings...and a trampoline and bikes to ride and neighbors to play with. And his mom's good cooking! Kary attended St. Rose of Lima School through sixth grade, then junior high and high school, graduating from Denison with the Class of 1990.
Then he met this girl...he referred to her as the love of his life...whose name was Penny Wetzel. She became the mother of his three children: Kayla Nichole, Tyler James, and Brady Evan Reis. He was always eager to share about them, clearly the joys of his life. He got to see Kayla get into nursing and he saw Tyler graduate from high school last spring. He hoped he would live to be there for Brady's graduation, too.
Kary was an ardent worker. He worked a few years on a dairy farm, he worked for Pizza Hut, he worked for Culligan Water Softeners for a few years, and he operated heavy equipment moving earth, for which he had a great talent. He loved to take Penny and the kids to Cutty's where his parents had a membership and where the kids could swim and play with their cousins. He always enjoyed playing cards such as Euchre and Hillbilly Rummy, camping and fishing, as well as just shooting baskets. He had become fond of cooking as well. For viewing entertainment, he loved watching movies and he enjoyed cold case episodes.
Kary died at home on January 29, 2023, the last Sunday of January, at the age of 51. Preceding him in death were maternal grandparents Herb and Irene Stolz Swanson and paternal grandparents, Henry and Gladys Hardy Reis, as well as his father Vernon Reis; sister Kathleen Hawes and her husband, Clay; brother- in-law Kevin Nulle; uncles Leonard, Merlin, and Gale Reis, aunts Beulah Crane and Leoda Blunk, and four Swanson uncles: Richard, Gene, Darrell, and Jerry; and Swanson cousins Wanda, Becky, David, Cheryl, and Katherine.
