Kenneth Joseph Pick was born November 2, 1929, the son of Joseph and Loretta Otto Pick. He died at his home in Denison, Iowa, Saturday, August 6, 2016 at the age of eighty-six.
Kenny was born in Carroll, Iowa and grew up on the family farm near Breda, Iowa. He received his education at St. Bernard’s Catholic School in Breda, graduating with the class of 1947. After completing his education, he worked with his father on the family farm and was an active baseball player in the area before entering the United States Navy, January 9, 1951 in Des Moines, Iowa. While serving his country, he remained active in baseball and was associated with Navy baseball teams. He served more than 3 years in foreign and sea duty and received the Good Conduct Medal, China Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. He was honorably discharged from his Naval duties on November 5, 1954 and returned to the Breda area.
He was united in marriage to Verma Jean Poen, May 12, 1954, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Breda. The couple was blessed with the birth of six children. After returning home from the service, he farmed in the Breda area for 16 years. Then they purchased a farm in the Kiron area where they resided for 45 years. Kenny and Verma Jean moved to Denison in November of 2015.
Kenny was a loving husband, father and grandfather who cared for his family with sincere devotion. He had an inspiring faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a member of the Catholic Order of Fosters. While a parishioner of St. Martin’s in Odebolt he taught Catechism. He retired at the age of 63 and occupied his leisure time attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards and fishing in Minnesota and Lake Okoboji where they summered for 21 years. He enjoyed reading newspapers and Western novels along with other best sellers.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Don. Survivors include his wife, Verma Jean of Denison; five sons: Ron and his wife, Mary of Des Moines; Mark and his wife, Janna of Dodge City, Kansas; Michael and his wife, Regina of Omaha; Jeff and his wife, Jerri of Round Rock, Texas; and Scott and his wife, Katie of Denison; one daughter, Joan Soladay and her husband, Jeff of Greenville, South Carolina; fourteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Willa Mae Pick of Des Moines; many other relatives and friends.
