Larry Richard Petersen was born February 15, 1941, the son of Richard and Caroline (Quandt) Petersen. He died Tuesday, February 22, 2011, at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, at the age of seventy.
He was born in Blue Island, Illinois, where he was baptized in Christ by Rev. Walter Ferne. His family had moved there from Iowa during the depression years to a job of manual grave digging. Larry was confirmed April 3, 1955 at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. He received his education in the Charter Oak Community Schools. Larry was united in marriage to Maureen Baak on August 21, 1960. He worked for Ed Baak Repair until the couple moved to Schleswig in 1964 where Larry owned and operated a repair shop and was a member of the Schleswig Fire Department. The couple was blessed with three children. They moved to Ricketts in 1967 and were both employed by Ed Baak Repair. He was also a member of the Ricketts Volunteer Fire Department. The family moved to Denver, Colorado, in 1972 and returned to Charter Oak in 1976. In 1977, they bought the Town and Country Caf and in 1978, they moved the caf to the Community Building. In 1979 they bought the Oaks Lanes and Oaks Lounge. In 1981, they sold the Oaks Caf and in 1983, sold the Oaks Lounge and Lanes to Ed Baak. In 1987, they opened Petersen Repair in Charter Oak, repairing cars, trucks, and farm machinery. In 1988 they also acquired a license for a used car dealership, known as Petersen Motors & Repair. He was also a member of the Charter Oak Fire Department. For the past eight years he thoroughly enjoyed driving truck for QLF. Larry also liked to hunt and fish with his many friends, and nephews John and Mark.
He married Linda (Johannsen) Holverson of Soldier on January 19, 2008. They had few, but very happy years together as Larry was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis, bringing on many complications.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Maureen in 2006; and one sister-in-law, Rhoda. Survivors include his wife, Linda; two daughters: Victoria and Robin; one son, Dean; step-son, Ryan and his wife, Melissa and daughter, Lauren; grandson, Grant; extended family, Chad and wife, Carrie; extended grandchildren, Clara and Dane; one brother, Lloyd and his wife, Lois; one sister, LaVonne and her husband, Leroy; sisters-in-law: Cindy and special friend, Ron; Kathleen and her husband, Ervin ; Pam and her husband, Tony; Drene and her husband, Paul; Tami and friend, Kevin; brothers-in-law: Ron and his wife, Judy; Allen; Butch and his wife, Tracey; Randy and his family; special close friend, Roger and his wife, Chris; many other relatives and dear friends.
