Larry Walter Thies

Larry Walter Thies was born on April 8, 1945, to Walter and Joyce (Holman) Thies in Denison, Iowa. Larry was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He attended high school in Rosemead, California for two years. He graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1964, and was a proud member of both football teams. Larry then worked for Comstock Sand and Gravel, Montgomery Ward and Farmland Foods.

On December 5, 1975, Larry was united in marriage to Mary Graham at Zion Lutheran Church. Larry was a police officer for many years and had a K9 dog. Later in life, he drove truck in which he really enjoyed traveling the country.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Izaak Walton League. He had a soft spot for animals, especially his cats. He enjoyed going to the casino and fishing. In his younger years, he enjoyed camping. He cherished spending time with his family and friends.

Larry passed away at home, surrounded by his family, on March 18, 2022, at the age of 76 years, 11 months and 10 days.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Jane Thies on June 28, 2009; daughter, Lori Ann Thies on February 22, 1970; grandson, Jordyn Thies on November 29, 1994; and brother, Donald Thies. He is survived by his children: Cory Thies of Schleswig, Jeff (Timbra) Thies of Denison and Jenni (John) Martin of Deloit; step-children: Donny Graham Jr. of Council Bluffs, Rex Graham of Oregon, and Amy (Ken) Kethcart Stanton, Nebraska; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters: Linda (Steve) Culver of Hayden, Idaho and Darlene Taylor of Longmont, Colorado; and many other relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 25, 2022, also at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Interment will be held in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery also in Denison. Memorials may be directed to the Denison City Pound.
