Laura Mae Cose was born September 4, 1922, the daughter of Henry and Katherine Frahm Schurke. She died at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, Friday, December 2, 2011, at the age of eighty-nine.
She was born on the family farm in Milford Township near Deloit, Iowa, and baptized on October 6, 1922. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 5, 1936, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by the Rev. William Frese. She received her education at Milford Township No. 3 and the Deloit Public School, graduating with the class of 1940. After completing her education, she was employed by Armours Egg processing plant in Denison.
On December 17, 1943, she was united in marriage to Curtis Cose at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Curtis was in the U.S. Army based at Camp Swift, Texas, where the couple settled until September 1944,when they moved to Fort Dix, New Jersey. Curtis was then stationed overseas and Laura Mae returned home.
While Curtis was overseas during World War II, Laura Mae was employed in the accounting Department of the Glenn L. Martin Bomber Plant in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1946, after the war ended, the couple was reunited in Deloit where they made their home, and were blessed with the birth of two sons, Larry and Ronald. After the boys were in school, she began working at Montgomery Ward and also as a part time clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in Deloit and neighboring post offices. In 1980, she was appointed postmaster at the Deloit Post Office, and retired from there in 1988. She was also the Deloit City Clerk, a part time job for twenty-two years.
Laura Mae was a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved spending time with her family, especially her boys school sports and music events and in later years, the grandchildrens events. She also enjoyed summer camping, fishing, gardening, ballroom dancing, and a social game of cards. She was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church. After she retired, she served as a financial teller for many years, and was also a member of the Zion Fellowship Club. In 2008, Curtis and Laura Mae were blessed with sixty-five years of marriage.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Curtis in January 2009, one brother, Alven Schurke, and one sister, Elenora Riley. She is survived by two sons, Larry and his wife, Doris of Norwalk, Iowa, and Ronald and his wife, Karla of Lincloln, Nebraska; five grandchildren: Jennifer Kownacki and her husband, Tony, Jeff Cose, Stacy Gutschenritter and her husband, Matthew, Chad Cose and his wife, Brooke; Jill Watkins and her husband, Daniel; nine great-grandchildren, Brady, Emma, Mitchell, Katherine, Landon, Kendal, Hadley, McKenna and Devin; one sister-in-law, Yvonne Holdsworth of Manilla, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
