Leila Emma Zage was born September 15, 1920, the daughter of John William and Esther Sciford Ebsen. She passed away Thursday, April 19, 2012, at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 91.
Leila was born in Schleswig, Iowa. She received her education in school near her home. Leila was united in marriage to Bernhardt Petersen on September 27, 1940, at St. John Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township, in Kiron, Iowa, and this union was blessed with the birth of one daughter. Bernhardt passed away in 1956. Leila was united in marriage to Marvin Zage on May 11, 1957, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The couple settled on the home farm where they lived until moving to Schleswig in 1967.
Leila had a very strong faith and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Leila and Marvin enjoyed playing Cribbage in their leisure time. Leila was a good cook and her family enjoyed her cooking. She and Marvin went dancing often with polkas being their favorite kind of dance. Leila also kept busy reading and doing crossword puzzles. Fishing was a favorite summertime activity, especially at Spirit Lake and Lake View, Iowa. Leila was a very social lady and enjoyed her time at the Denison Care Center participating in the many activities, especially Euchre and Bingo. She made many new friends with the residents and staff at the Care Center and was Citizen of the Month in March 2012.
Leila was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Bernhardt in 1956; and Marvin in 1999; one sister, Wilma; one brother, John; and one son-in-law, Ralph. Survivors include one daughter, Donna; one granddaughter, Kori and her husband, Darren; and two great-grandchildren, Chase and Tyler; other relatives and friends.
