Leon Neubauer

Leon Skinny Edward Neubauer was born December 17, 1927, the son of Herman and Louise Else Neubauer. He passed away Saturday, May 11, 2013, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 85.
Leon was born in rural Battle Creek, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ on January 15, 1928, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Battle Creek and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Grant Township near Ida Grove, Iowa, on March 29, 1942. Leon received his education in rural country schools and graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1945. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in April 1946, serving with the 3rd Calvary at Fort Meade, Maryland, and was honorably discharged in September 1947.
On June 10, 1949, Leon was united in marriage to Mildred Nulle at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison by Rev. C.E. Schmidt. They were blessed with the birth of four children. In 1951 the couple moved to a farm near Ida Grove where they farmed until 1985 at which time they moved to Schleswig, Iowa.
Leon began driving bus for the Schleswig Community Schools, a job he really enjoyed. He was very active in the community and was President of the Schleswig Community Club, Legion Commander, and helped install the Parade of Flags at the Morgan Cemetery. Leons church life was also very important to him and he served as President of the Congregation for both Trinity Lutheran and Immanuel Lutheran in Schleswig and was an Elder at Immanuel. He also served on the Grant Township Cemetery Board. Continuing his community service, Leon was a volunteer driver for the Veterans van that traveled to Omaha. In his spare time he enjoyed playing cards, cribbage, golfing, and bowling. You could always tell when hed get a strike in bowling as youd hear him yell Yabba Dabba Doo! Leon and Millie chaperoned Schleswig band trips for many years. Leon was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who enjoyed family gatherings and attending his grandchildrens activities. It always brought a smile to his face whenever his family came to visit.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife of 50 years, Millie in 2000. Survivors include three daughters, Janet Neubauer of Des Moines, Iowa; Lila Bubke and her husband, Tim of Schleswig; and Nola Wingren and her husband, Matthew of Rochester, Minnesota; one son, Kevin Neubauer and his wife, Tammy of Ida Grove, Iowa; ten grandchildren: Melissa Jurgensen and her husband, Tim, Jason Bubke and his wife, Carrie, Kyle Bubke, Allison Lucas and her husband, Dan, Amanda, Andrew, and Audrey Wingren, Tasha DeBode and her husband, Jason, Seth and Shelby Neubauer; four great-grandchildren: Travis and Tyler Jurgensen; Khloe and Sawyer Bubke; and one sister, Jeanine Baker and her husband, Melvin of Kiron, Iowa; other relatives and friends.
