Leona Dorothy Walde was born September 19, 1920, the daughter of Henry and Freida Mundt Boyens. She died at the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in Manilla, Iowa, April 29, 2016, at the age of ninety-five.
Leona was born in Redlands, California, where she was baptized in Christ as an infant. She was confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Zion Lutheran Church, April 9, 1933, by Rev. Frese. While young, she moved with her parents to Iowa. She received her education in the Denison Community High School, graduating with the class of 1938. After high school, Leona received her High School Normal Teaching Certificate. She taught school for a few years and met her husband, Walter. The couple was united in marriage, August 10, 1941, in Denison and was blessed with the birth of four children. They farmed for many years near Manilla and retired in 1962, when they moved to Denison.
They enjoyed traveling and socializing with family and friends. She enjoyed listening to the Kitchen Clatter show on the radio and especially enjoyed making strawberry floats for the grandchildren. It was customary to serve banana splits on Christmas Eve. Leona worked in the yarn department of Hydes Variety Store in Denison. In her leisure time, she enjoyed crocheting, sewing and caring for her flower and vegetable gardens. She made many items of clothing for her family. Her skill in crocheting provided her the ability to crochet a baby blanket for every one of her grandchildren.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother, Viola Boyens; her husband, Walter in 1982; one brother, Irvin Boyens; brothers-in-law, Raymond, Edward and Virgil; sisters-in-law, Lillian Fastenau, Ruby Jahn, Helen Hinze, and LaDonna Walde. Survivors include one son, Roger Walde and his wife, Carol; three daughters, Diane Sonnichsen and her husband, Dennis; Joleen Whited and her husband, Gale; and Sandra Baak; fourteen grandchildren, thirty-nine great-grandchildren; twenty-four great great-grandchildren; one step brother, Fred Jacobsen and his wife, Bonnie; sisters-in-law, Marion Boyens; Clara and Wilma Walde; Marilyn Yoakum; Marlene Brudenell; Gladys Hagny and her husband, Phil; Joann Walde; and one brother-in-law, Leonard Walde and his wife, Shirley; other relatives and friends.
