Leonard Lester Reis was born July 30, 1931, the son of Henry and Gladys Reis. He died Sunday, April 26, 2015 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-three.
Leonard was born on a farm near Woodbine, Iowa and received his education in rural schools near his home. He enlisted in the United States Army on February 12, 1953 and served during the Korean War. On February 11, 1954 he was honorably discharged from active duty, but stayed in the reserves for another 8 years. On August 15, 1957, Leonard was united in marriage to Phyllis Crane in Jackson Minnesota. The couple was blessed with four children and they made their home in Denison. He was a loving and devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather who encouraged his family to enjoy life. Leonard was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa and the American Legion Post #8. Leonard had many great employment opportunities over the years, owning a taxi service, working for Montgomery Ward as a delivery man, and later working as Street Commissioner for the City of Denison. Leonard thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors where he spent many hours in the garden, taking great pride in his yard. He valued the time spent playing cards at family gatherings, fishing trips to Minnesota, camping trips, and boating with his family. In his leisure time he also enjoyed playing bingo, going to auctions and garage sales, but spending time with family and friends was his greatest pleasure. Leonard will be greatly missed and will be remembered for his endless sense of humor, always teasing and playing jokes, and for the love and pride of his family.
