Lloyd Jesse Birney of Dunlap, Iowa, was born January 18, 1939, in Silver Creek, Washington, the son of Ralph and Rosa Igou Birney. He passed away Monday, June 29, 2020, at Rose Vista Home in Woodbine, Iowa, at the age of eighty-one.
Lloyd attended Dow City schools and graduated from Dow City High School in 1958. He continued his education at a technical school in Omaha, Nebraska, where he studied auto body repairs. Lloyd then began his lifelong career in the auto body business. He operated and built The Judge Sled for multitudes of pickup and tractor pulls all over the Midwest for many years.
He was united in marriage and was the father of three children: Calvin, Denise and Tanra. Lloyd later was united in marriage with Jean Bretey in 1985 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, and added her three children to his family: Eric, Ryan and Carrie.
Having a curious, clever and innovative mind, Lloyd was always working on a new project. He loved nature and trees, antiques, history and science. Airplanes were also of interest to him. Lloyd not only obtained his pilot’s license, he owned 2 airplanes and also built two ultra light airplanes. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Clement Birney. Survivors include: his wife, Jean Birney of Dunlap, Iowa; children: Calvin (Sherry) Birney of Kansas, Denise (Ronald Graham) Birney of Iowa, Tanra Wishon of North Carolina, Eric (Melanie) Bretey of Boone, Iowa, Ryan (Tammy) Bretey of Persia, Iowa, and Carrie (Greg) Gunderson of Denison, Iowa; seventeen grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three sisters: Eileen, Clara Mae and Louise all of Texas; other relatives and friends.
