Lorena Laura Louise Petersen was born May 1, 1916, in Denison, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Marie Kiepe Fredericks. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, on Saturday, February 5, 2011, at the age of ninety-four.
Lorena grew up on the family farm northwest of Denison, attending Hanover #7 school until the eighth grade. She was in the first confirmation class at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, on April 13, 1930.
Lorena married Rudolph Petersen on March 20, 1935, at the Zion parsonage in Denison with Pastor William Frehse performing the ceremony.
Her married life was spent on the farm until the couple retired to Dow City in 1964. Lorena worked at Dow City Hardware and she and Rudy were janitors at the Arion school and the Dow City Community Building.
Rudy died in 1988 and Lorena moved to Oakwood Apartments in Denison and later to Eventide.
Lorena was a wonderful cook and will be remembered by her family for her apple pies and the delicious gravy she could make. She loved to crochet and embroider and made many sets of pillow cases for family and friends. Lorena also enjoyed word finds.
Lorena was preceded in death by her husband Rudolph; one son, Glen; daughter Gloria; grandson Michael; three sisters: Elsie, Anna, Bernice; and one brother, Raymond.
Survivors include one daughter, Eunice and her husband, Duane; daughter-in-law, Norma; son-in-law John; nine grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold and his wife, Evelyn; and sister-in-law, Dorothy; nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and graveside rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. Organist Karen Kahl provided accompaniment for congregational hymns, "In the Cross of Christ I Glory," "Jesus Sinners Doth Receive," "Jesus Lives! The Victory's Won," and "Abide with Me." Hononary pallbearers were Raechel Hollander, Jayden Hernandez, Laudry Hollander, Zachary Andersen, Connie Andersen, Henry Hollander, Jonna Andersen, Eileen Petersen, Jordan Petersen, Ava Hernandez, Colleen Trujillo, Ashley Herrera, Autumn Berry, Carolyn Berry, Zeth Petersen, Mason Berry, Aaron Nelsen, Heather Fries, and Cindy Krick. Serving as pallbearers were John M. Feddersen, Delaine Petersen, Bryan Hollander, Jacob Berry, Coleman Petersen, David Hollander, Colby Petersen, and Mike Fries. The family invited everyone to return to the church for fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
