Lorraine Amelia Louise Gierstorf Groth was born January 25, 1925, the daughter of Otto and Amelia Wulf Hagemann. She passed away August 25, 2015 at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa at the age of ninety.
Lorraine was born on a farm in Morgan Township in Crawford County, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ on March 22, 1925 at Friedens Evangelical Church in Schleswig and later confirmed on April 2, 1939, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Battle Creek, Iowa.
Lorraine started her education in Goodrich #5 near Denison and entered 3rd grade at Garfield Township near Battle Creek and later graduating from Battle Creek High School in 1943. After graduation, she attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, taking Normal Training for her teaching certificate. She later taught in Otter Creek School near Schleswig.
On December 11, 1946, Lorraine was united in marriage to Wilbert Gierstorf at St. Paul’s Parsonage, Hanover Township, Charter Oak. The couple settled on a farm near Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of four children. Wilbert passed away in January of 1978. On August 20, 1981, Lorraine was united in marriage to Chester Groth at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, where they made their home. Chester passed away March 2010.
Lorraine was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and LWML in Schleswig. She was also a member of Farmerettes and several card clubs. Her hobbies included cooking, sewing and quilting. Lorraine was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed being with her family, and was very proud of her grandchildren and their accomplishments.
On October 30, 2006, Lorraine became a resident of Willow Dale Wellness Village in Battle Creek and enjoyed all of the activities offered as long as her health permitted. During her stay, she made several close friends with the staff and residents.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; Wilbert and Chester; two brothers; Lester and his wife, Bernice and Leonard and his wife, Margaret. Survivors include two sons; Arlen and his wife, Janice and Verdean both of Schleswig; two daughters; Janet; Darlis and her husband, Steve; six grandchildren: Donavon(Stephanie); Colin(Alaina); Tara (Todd); Megan (Al), James (Ruth) and Ryan (Stephanie); eight great-grandchildren; two step great-granddaughters; one step great-great granddaughter; many other relatives and friends.
