Louis Joseph Mengwasser was born December 22, 1931 to the late John and Marcella (Leenan) Mengwasser in Shelby County, Iowa. He was baptized on December 24, 1931 and he later confirmed his faith on May 2, 1944 at St. Peters Catholic Church in Defiance. He graduated from Catholic School with the class of 1949.
After graduation, Louis was drafted in the United States Army on December 10, 1952 and was honorably discharged on December 9, 1954 at Fort MacArthur, California.
On November 26, 1955, Louis was united in marriage to Rosalene Taylor at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. To this union, six children were born: Russell, Jeffrey, Danny, Kristine, Kathleen and Vicki. They made their home in Denison.
He spent most of his life working for service stations, including Phillips 66, Sisson's Standard, Parrots and retiring from S & S Store in 1997. He was a long-time member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and also a member of the Denison American Legion Post No. 8 for many years.
He enjoyed gardening, watching birds, flowers and word search puzzles. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and through thick or thin he never abandoned his love for the San Francisco 49ers. In earlier years, he loved taking the family fishing. Above it all, Louis loved his family, especially the bonds he made with his grandchildren.
Louis passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, August 2, 2021 at his home in Denison attaining the age of eighty-nine years, seven months and eleven days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister: Betty Jean Gross and brothers: Raymond, Herbert and Bernard Mengwasser.
Left to cherish his memory, his wife: Rosie Mengwasser of Denison; children: Russell Mengwasser and his wife Jeanne of Denison, Jeffrey Mengwasser and his wife Cindy of Denison, Danny Mengwasser of Denison, Kristine and her husband Pascal Danet of Plattsmouth, Nebraska, Kathleen and her husband Miguel Guzman of Denison and Vicki Buter of Denison; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; other relatives and friends.
Visitation is 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 9, 2021 at Huebner Funeral Home in Denison with a Prayer Service at 6:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. A private inurnment will take place at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the family.
