Lulu Vivian Schau was born April 13, 1913, the daughter of Alfred and Catherine Enos Henderson. She passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa, at the age of ninety-eight.
She was born in Blairstown, Iowa. She attended several Iowa schools in her early education and graduated from Redfield High School in Redfield, South Dakota. On June 12, 1934, Lulu married Adolf Schau in Wall Lake, Iowa, at his parents home. The couple settled on a farm near Battle Creek, Iowa, until 1936. They moved to Charter Oak, Iowa, and started a harness and shoe repair business. To this union, five children were born. Lulu and Adolf were blessed to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 1984.
She and Adolf started The Blue Ribbon Inn in Charter Oak, with Lulu running the caf part from 1948-52. She enjoyed gardening, canning her produce, quilting, sewing, reading, and baking cookies and pies. Other favorite pastimes were playing Scrabble and doing crossword puzzles. Spending time with her family was very important to her. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, a member of the Methodist Womens Society since 1938, a 60-year member of Eastern Star, and Royal Neighbors of America since 1942.
Lulu was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Adolf in 1996; one son, Darrell; one daughter, Kathleen and her husband, Donald; five brothers: Engle, Haddic and Lenzy; and two in infancy; four sisters: Myrtle and Margaret; and two in infancy; and one great-grandson in infancy. Survivors include two sons: Edwin and his wife, Pearl; Irvin and his wife, Kathleen; one daughter, Luella and her husband, Roger; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
