Lyle C. Phillips

February 10, 1940 — June 24, 2017

Lyle Cecil Phillips was born February 10, 1940, the son of Cecil and Lucille Phillips on the Friedrichsen farm near Kiron, Iowa, Crawford County, Iowa. He passed away Saturday, June 24, 2017, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa, at the age of seventy-seven.
Lyle received his education at Otter Creek Township School near his home. He was united in marriage to Janice Timm on November 1, 1959, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ute, Iowa. To this union, five children were born, three passing in infancy. Lyle and Janice were married for fifty-seven years and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 2009.
His first job was working for Herb Braase at his service station, as well as working for Boyens Trucking and Mahoney Trucking. He began his farming career with his grandfather Julius Friedrichsen and started farming on his own in 1959 on his grandparents’ farm. Lyle and Janice lived there until moving to the Henry Timm farm near Ute in 1974. In 1986, they bought the Timm farm and in 2003 they bought the Friedrichsen farm where they raised sheep, cattle and hogs. Retiring from farming in 2001, they subsequently moved to Mapleton, Iowa, in 2011.
Lyle enjoyed going to the Denison Sale Barn, attending farm sales, joining friends down town for coffee, socializing especially talking about the old days, telling jokes, playing cards with friends and family as well as going to the casinos. He kept a journal of daily events such as the temperature, bills and happenings for the day from the day he and Janice were married until recently.
Lyle was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; one daughter in infancy; two sons, Dean Lyle and Mark Alan; and his beloved dog “Duke”. Survivors include: his wife, Janice; two sons, Alan and his wife, Leisha, and Arlan and his wife, Lori; two grandchildren, Clarissa and husband, Aron, and Travis and special friend, Jamie; four great-grandchildren, Elianna, Paxtynn, Chayce and Anniston; one brother, Steve and special friend, Roberta; other relatives and friends.
