Macel Fern Schneider was born January 3, 1929, the daughter of Everett and Gertrude Persinger. She passed away Thursday, November 21, 2019, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of ninety.
Macel was born on her parents’ farm near Hornick, Iowa. She was baptized into Christ March 3, 1929, at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Hornick and later confirmed there on April 2, 1944, with a class of ten students. She received her education in the Smithland Consolidated Schools and graduated with the class of 1947. During her high school years, she lettered in basketball, sang in Glee Club and other small groups and participated in school plays. Growing up, Macel helped on the family farm with field work and other outdoor chores. Childhood memories included getting together with relatives after church, heating bricks in the oven to stay warm in bed and the church Christmas Eve Services. Their entertainment was using their imagination with whatever they could find. After graduation, she continued her education at Commercial Extension Secretarial School in Omaha, Nebraska and subsequently worked for various insurance companies.
While working in Omaha, Macel met John Schneider. They were united in marriage on May 22, 1949, in Macel’s little country church near Hornick. After the reception, they had a dance at Peony Park, Omaha. The couple made their home in Omaha from 1949 to 1951. John accepted a job in Topeka, Kansas for a short time before moving to Sioux City, Iowa. In 1956, they purchased a dry cleaning business in Moville, Iowa and in January 1962, they moved the business to Denison. Macel worked side by side in every aspect of their dry cleaning business.
Macel was an active and faithful member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison, where she was involved in the Women’s Guild, Quilts for Missions and helping make church banners. She was also a member of Home and Hobby for thirty-four years. She treasured the 4th of July family reunions, socializing in a game of cards, various crafts, working on family photo albums, using her gift of creativity and appreciated antiques. In her younger years, she and John loved dancing and celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary with a dance. They also enjoyed visiting relatives in Colorado, Kansas and Arkansas. One of Macel’s richest possessions was being a part of the Weber-Persinger family tree. She was very proud to be a part of this great family.
