Mae Hickey

Mary (Mae) Bridget Hickey was born May 2, 1923, the daughter of Andrew and Mary Powers Hickey. She passed away Saturday, August 25, 2012, at Eventide in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 89.
Mae was born in Manilla, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ on May 13, 1923, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manilla. In 1930 she moved with her family to the Vail, Iowa, area and received her first communion at St. Anns Catholic Church in Vail. Mae received her education in the St. Ann Catholic School in Vail graduating with the class of 1941. Following graduation Mae worked at the Vail Telephone office. She attended St. Anthony School of Nursing in Carroll. Upon earning her LPN degree, Mae worked at the Family Health Center in Carroll, Iowa, and then Dr. Floods office in Denison, Iowa, where she retired.
Mae was a very kind and helpful person to everyone. She was instrumental in helping Russell raise Pat, Matt, and Shelly. Aunt Mae held a very special place in their heart. After her retirement, she kept up her LPN license on order to help those who were sick and in need of medical care. In 1997 Mae was named Vail Citizen of the Year. She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail and a charter member of the Legion Auxiliary.
Mae was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew Michael and Mary Margaret Hickey; five brothers: Cyril and his wife, LaVerne; Frances; Leroy; Clifford; and Russell; and one sister, Alice Dube and her husband, Robert. Survivors include many nieces and nephews; one sister-in-law, Marybelle Hickey of Shawnee Mission, Kansas, other relatives and friends.
