Marcus Hugo Ludwig Kuhl was born March 11, 1914, the son of Ed and Lena Kuhl. He passed away Saturday, September 1, 2012, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 98.
Marcus was born on a farm northwest of Aspinwall in Crawford County, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa, on October 18, 1914, and confirmed there on April 13, 1930. As a farm boy, animals were a central part of Marcus life from his early years on. In addition to the normal farm animals, he and his brothers raised guinea pigs, which at times, was not appreciated by their parents, especially when they started squealing at first light. Marcus enjoyed sharing stories with relatives and friends about his many experiences with horses, the Shetland ponies he rode as a child, runaway teams, the new foals, and long days spent in the fields with work horses. He spoke often of his favorite team of Percheron horses, Dick and Grant, and his favorite pair of hounds, Nip and Tuck.
Marcus was united in marriage to Alice Gawley on June 12, 1940, at the home of her parents. The couple settled on the family farm near Manning and were blessed with the birth of two children. They worked side by side on the farm and being no strangers to hard work, they purchased a motel in Storm Lake, Iowa, in 1967, putting in many long hours.
Having no time for hobbies in their earlier years, Marcus and Alice took up fishing, gardening, and traveling when they retired to Denison in 1975. Many fishing trips were taken to Minnesota, Wisconsin, and in Iowa. Marcus was always trying to catch the lunker. Marcus cherished spending time with his family and friends, always eager to hear about changes in farming practices, livestock, and where the fish were biting. He enjoyed traveling to many destinations, but his most memorable trip was the six week journey he and Alice took to Alaska. He was blessed to have spent 72 years with the love of his life, and they were nearly inseparable in recent years. Marcus was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison.
Marcus was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice in June of this year; two brothers, Herbert and Marvin Kuhl; three sisters, Elsie Wilhelm; Melvina Vollstedt; and Kathryn Vollstedt. He is survived by one son, Glen and his wife, Cheryl of Payson, Arizona; and one daughter, Donna Harm and her husband, Roger of Schleswig, Iowa; two grandsons, Craig Harm and his wife, KLynn, and Brent Harm and his wife, Sarah; four great-grandchildren, Alex, Kara, Sawyer, and Hildie Harm; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
