Marie Elizabeth Evers was born on July 30, 1917, in Denison, Iowa, the daughter of James and Nora Keating, one of seven children. She died Friday, February 24, 2017, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa, at the age of ninety-nine.
Marie graduated from Denison High School in 1935. After high school, she attended summer school and taught country school in the fall. Marie and Louie met at the UWANA Dance Hall in Denison. On January 31, 1940, Marie married Louis Evers at St. Rose of Lima at Denison, it was a double wedding with her brother James Keating and his wife, Marie. They moved to Vail and started farming. Marie and Louis were blessed with four children. Marie spent several years helping Louis on the farm. In 1955, she returned to teaching in the country school near Ricketts.
In 1959, Marie and Louis quit farming and moved to Soldier. Marie taught in the Soldier (East Monona) school system until 1981 when she retired. In her retirement, she enjoyed traveling on vacations with family. Marie loved sharing her baked goods with family and friends. Marie also enjoyed neighbors stopping by for coffee.
Marie was able to stay at her home with the help of her daughters for three years. In 2015, she moved to Maple Heights and while she was there enjoyed playing Yahtzee and Bingo. Marie was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Ute and a member of the Altar Society.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis Evers; one son, Clint Evers; two grandsons, Matt Evers and Doug Wessel; four sisters, Irene Christensen and husband Oscar, Lucille (Pluxie) Gallagher and husband Arnie, Marg Beerman, Kaye Riddle and husband Louie; one brother, James Keating and wife Marie; brother-in-law, Mark Huebner; sons-in-law, David Gorham, Jim Pithan, Terry Pape and Blair Erickson.
Survivors include three daughters, Connie, Shari, and Mary and husband, Hyman; daughter-in-law, Pat; grandchildren, Jeff and wife, Mona and husband, Brian, Robert and wife, Sheila, Dan and wife, Jayne, Dawn, Mike and wife, Judy, Jackie, Kim and husband, Russell, Brenda and friend Darby; eighteen great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren, and one sister, Rita.
