Marlene M Mason

July 15, 1933 — January 6, 2019

Marlene Mae Mason was born July 15, 1933, in Carroll, Iowa, the daughter of Herbert and Elsie Kroeger. She passed away at her home in Westside, Iowa, Sunday, January 6, 2019, at the age of eighty-five.
Marlene grew up on a farm in rural Arcadia. She was baptized and confirmed in the Arcadia Presbyterian Church. She received her education in the Manning school system and was a graduate of Manning High School. In February 1952, Marlene was united in marriage to Dennis Heuton in the Lidderdale Lutheran Church and later joined Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia. They had 2 children, David and Nancy.
Marlene was a homemaker and co-owner of Denny’s Restaurant and Lounge in Westside. She was later employed at the popcorn plant in Westside and at the Westside C Store. In July 1989, Marlene was united in marriage to Robert Mason at the United Church in Westside.
Camping and traveling were her favorite leisure-time activities. She enjoyed going to Virginia by the Potomac, attending the Old Thrashers Reunion at Mount Pleasant, traveling the Alaskan Highway in Alaska, Buckeye camping in Arizona and camping at small campgrounds in Iowa and Minnesota.
Bob and Marlene spent their winters in their seasonal home near Salome, Arizona for 18 years. Marlene’s other favorite activities included reading, playing cards, watching NBA games, bird watching and socializing. She enjoyed sharing stories about family history, high school events and growing up in rural Iowa. Marlene’s favorite things were flowers, especially yellow roses, the color purple, the Golden State Warriors and ice cream.
Marlene loved to cook and was famous for her apple pie, potato salad, camel humps pastry, hot milk cake, raisin bars and homemade candy. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Marlene was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Verna and her husband, Earl. Survivors include: her husband, Bob; children: Nancy and husband, Roger; David and wife, Gail; Bruce; Connie and husband, Eric; Brenda and husband, Chip; and Denise and husband, Karl; seventeen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nephew, Evan and wife, Nancy; other relatives and friends.
