Marlyn D. Else

September 12, 1926 — January 12, 2018

Marlyn D. Else was born September 12, 1926, the daughter of Harvey and LuVerne Bielenberg Mohr. On January 12, 2018 she took her last breath peacefully in sleep, surrounded by her family.

Marlyn was baptized in Christ on December 11, 1926 by Rev. Mauch at Friedens Evangelical Church in Schleswig. During her youth her parents moved to a farm near Kiron. She was confirmed June 4, 1939 by Rev. Ferdinand Reith at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kiron, Iowa. Marlyn graduated from Kiron High School in 1944 and attended Commercial Extension Business College in Omaha, Nebraska.

On September 28, 1947 Marlyn was united in marriage to James Else at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig by Rev. Elmer Strelow. The couple made their home in Schleswig and in 1951 were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Vickie.

James and Marlyn owned Modern Appliance & Hardware, later adding Thermogas Propane where she worked in the store, doing bookwork for both businesses. She taught Vacation Bible School for 18 years and Sunday School and Confirmation classes for 25 years. In addition, she worked with Rev. Frederick A. Wiese as the church secretary, a position she held for 30 years. She belonged to the Immanuel Lutheran Ladies Aid and sang in the church choir.

Marlyn’s hobbies included sewing, golfing, and singing in the Schleswig Schlesfest. She enjoyed playing cards with her Bridge club and Euchre with her family. She very much enjoyed socializing with friends. Marlyn and James were able to travel, including visiting Austria, Italy and Germany in addition to 3 wonderful family cruises. Grandma always said “spending time with family is best of all.”

Marlyn was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, James in July of 2017. She is survived by her daughter, Vickie and friend BJ of Schleswig; her granddaughter, Andrea Schultz and her husband, Larry of Storm Lake; her grandson Aaron Huebner and his wife, Andrea and their children, Isla and Hagen of Rochester, Minnesota; her granddaughter Allisa Tiefenthaler and her husband, Jon and their children Raymond and Harrison of Breda, Iowa.
