Marlys Anne Riessen was born February 13, 1936 to the late Karl and Ruth (Paulson) Mummert in Aurelia, Iowa where she was raised on the family farm. She was involved in 4-H, played the piano, and took care of people in her community when they were sick with scarlet fever, cancer or wherever she was needed. She graduated Aurelia High School with the class of 1953.
After graduation, she attended the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa where she attained her registered nursing degree in 1956. She was employed at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital as an obstetrics nurse and was promoted to supervisor until her retirement in 1986. During her career, she helped deliver generations of babies in Crawford County. She was highly loved and respected by hospital staff, patients and their families. She went above and beyond the call of duty.
On April 21, 1957, Marlys was united in marriage to Arlo Riessen at United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. To this union, they were blessed with two children: Lisa and Michael. They made their home in Denison. Over the years, Marlys always lent a hand in helping Arlo with farm work and livestock.
In earlier years, Marlys and Arlo enjoyed traveling, camping and hunting; including a six-week trip to Alaska and a trip to Ireland. They loved to go dancing, playing cards, bingo and music. Also, they would snowbird every winter to Vegas and then Arizona where they lived full time for many years. Marlys was an avid reader who enjoyed watching football and gardening, especially tending to her Hosta's. She loved life and had such a kind heart. Above all, she cherished her family more than anything.
Marlys passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at Brighton Gardens in Omaha, Nebraska attaining the age of eight-five years, eleven months and six days. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Dan Mummert and Arlo Mummert.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband of sixty-four years, Arlo Riessen of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter, Lisa and her husband Gary Greder of Denison; son: Michael Riessen of Aspen, Colorado; granddaughter, Samantha Greder of Savannah, Georgia; sister, Karla McCleerey of Condon, Montana; brother, Roger Mummert and his wife Barbara of Aurelia, Iowa; other relatives and friends.
Private Graveside Service is on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig.
