Mary Ann Lau was born July 9, 1951, at Mapleton, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Allie Schable. She passed away Thursday, May 17, 2018, after a courageous battle with cancer, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa, at the age of sixty-six.
Mary was baptized at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, Iowa, on August 5, 1951, and was confirmed at that church in April of 1965. She was united in marriage to Pat Stapleton and they had two sons. She was also married to Jim Richardson and later was united with Robert Sleight. During her years of employment, Mary worked at Wesco, IBP and Eventide in Denison, Iowa.
Watching her son and grandsons race their cars, attending the horse show expo with the Silver Spurs and helping Robert with horse show events brought her great pleasure as she baked bread and cinnamon rolls for the participants of the events. Visiting with everyone and especially socializing during the set up of the exhibition made her happy. She loved butterflies, canning pickles and salsa, gardening with flowers, cooking and watching home improvement shows on television. The nurses and physicians in Carroll admired her strength, endurance and courage.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and one great-granddaughter, Raina. Survivors include: her husband, Robert; two sons: Mike and his wife, Heather, and Mark; seven grandchildren: Corey, Alec, Kirk, Michelle, Keith, Cheyenne and Mateya; four great-grandchildren: Dakota, James, Jayden and Savannah; one sister, Laurie and her husband, Joe; four brothers: Carl and his wife, Ellen; David and his wife, Kathy; Don and his wife, Val; and Ray and his wife, Lynn; special friend, Chris; other relatives and friends.
