Mary Ellen Akers was born July 18, 1934, the daughter of Carl and Helen Larsen Hansen. She passed away Sunday, March 3, 2013, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 78.
Mary was born in Scranton, Iowa. She received her education in the Exira Community Schools graduating with the class of 1953. After high school Mary worked as a waitress at the Corner Inn Restaurant in Defiance. Mary was united in marriage to Jerome Lahr on September 2, 1955, in Omaha, Nebraska, and to this union was born two sons, Dennis and Steve. Jerome and Mary made their home in Manilla. Mary was united in marriage to Leonard Akers on June 30, 1972, in South Dakota. They lived in Manilla until 1974 before moving to Denison. Mary worked for the HoHum Motel in Denison and Eventide Lutheran Home from 1977 - 1996.
Mary enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, embroidering, listening to music, and watching The Young and The Restless and other daytime television.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard in 1990; one sister, Nancy Holzfaster and her husband, Dale; and one nephew, Mark Albert. Survivors include two sons: Dennis Lahr and his wife, Chris of Atlantic, Iowa; Steve Lahr of Denison; two grandchildren: Marian Lahr and Mason Lahr; one sister, Betty Albert of Atlantic; two nephews, Monte Albert of Gowrie, Iowa; and Mike Albert and his wife, Joy; other relatives and friends.
