Mary Cary

Mary Cary was born January 13, 1931, the daughter of Leo Sherlock and Margaret Daley ONeill. She passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2010, in Ames, Iowa, at the age of seventy-nine. Mary was diagnosed with lymphoma in October 2009 and made the most of her time left with family and friends.
Mary was born in Jackson, Nebraska, in the house her grandfather built. She received her education and graduated from South Sioux City High School in South Sioux City, Nebraska, with the class of 1948. Following graduation she attended secretarial school in Sioux City, Iowa.
On April 28, 1951, Mary was united in marriage to her best friend, Glen Cary at St. Michaels Catholic Church in South Sioux City. The couple was blessed with the birth of six children. She worked at A.Y. McDonald in Sioux City until Richard was born. Mary was a homemaker and later worked as a teachers aide in Dow City, taught adult education at Wesco Industries before retiring, but continued to volunteer at Nevada Elementary doing what she loved- teaching children to read.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend who loved spending time with her family, having tea parties and traveling with them. She enjoyed exploring with her grandchildren and visiting museums with them. A favorite activity was dressing up as Mrs. Claus and reading stories to the children.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glen in 2006; one daughter, Maggie; one son, Richard Cary; and one sister, Jean Marie ONeill. Survivors include one son: Casey Cary and his wife, Heather of Dow City; three daughters: Jeanie Gibson and her husband, Jerry of Gilbert, Iowa; Cindy Anderson and her husband, Joe; Lisa Hovar and her husband, Matt, all of Nevada; 17 grandchildren; "soon-to-be two great-grandchildren";one daughter-in-law, Diane Cary of Forest Lake, Minnesota; three sisters: Peggie Demke of South Sioux City, Nebraska; Betty Tighe and her husband, Bob of Monticello, Iowa; Carol Livermore and her husband, Jimmie of Davenport, Iowa; two brothers: Danny ONeill and his wife, Mona of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Sherlock ONeill and his wife, Sue of De Witt, Iowa; many other relatives and friends.
Mary Cary, we will miss your positive attitude, hugs, and joyful way you looked at life.
