Mary A. Upton

February 7, 1935 — September 6, 2024

Mary Ann Upton, daughter of Albert and Dorthea (Scott) Heinold, was born on February 7, 1935, in Salem, MO. She attended local schools and graduated from Houston High School in 1954 before embarking on a fulfilling journey in life.

On May 29, 1954, Mary united in marriage to Robert Upton in Cabool, MO, and together they welcomed five children into their family: Dan, Roger, Don, Robin, and Robert. As a devoted homemaker, she invested her heart and soul into raising her children, cheering on their sporting events and activities with unwavering pride. Mary found joy in crafting and quilting, pursuits that allowed her to express her creativity and care for those she loved through her handmade gifts.

Mary's professional journey began when she moved from Missouri to Omaha, where she graduated from Anthis Beauty School and worked at a salon in the Woodmen Tower. In 1971, the couple moved to the farm in Boyer, IA and Mary became known as the “Neighborhood Beauty Shop.” Mary decided to further her education in Fort Dodge and took on a new role as a Restorative Aide at the Odebolt Nursing Home, where she touched the lives of many through her skills and compassion.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Mary was a passionate Nebraska Huskers football fan and a faithful member of the Lutheran Church. Her personality was cherished by many; she was known for her warmth and generosity. Among her friendships, she shared unforgettable moments with Nancy, Jolleen, and Marilyn, playing Bingo and Yahtzee together. In her later years, she embraced the spirit of adventure, traveling with her best friends through the picturesque states of the Northwest. One of her proudest moments came when she realized a lifelong dream by dipping her feet in the ocean, an experience that brought her immense joy.

Mary's culinary talents were remarkable, and she was recognized as an excellent cook, a skill that embodied her nurturing spirit. Throughout her life, she created countless memories for her family and friends, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication.

Mary passed away at Elm Crest Nursing Home in Harlan, IA, surrounded by her family, on September 6, 2024, at the age of 89 years, six months, and 30 days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Robert Upton, Sr., son-in-law, Dennis Bronkhorst, sisters: Louise, Bertie, and Francis; and one brother, Bob.

Survivors include her children: Dan (Sheila) Upton of Council Bluffs, Roger (Cheryl) Upton of Manilla, Don (Renee) Upton of Council Bluffs, Robin Bronkhorst, and Robert (Jill) Upton, all of Hawarden; 24 grandchildren; many great and great-great grandchildren; brother, Arthur (Nita) Heinold of Illinois; many other relatives and friends.
