Maureen Ann Vonnahme was born December 9, 1951, in Carroll, IA, the oldest daughter of Leon and Lois Poeppe Wenzel. She passed away on her farm in Vail, IA, on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at the age of sixty-five.
Maureen attended St. Bernard Catholic School in Breda, IA, graduating in 1969. She attended Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, IA, from 1969-1970. In 1970, she moved to Omaha, NE, where she began attending Patricia Stevens Career College and earned a Public Relations Certificate. During this time, she worked as a secretary at St. Joseph’s Hospital and played on Happy Joe’s Mixed League Softball Team with her sisters, who also lived in the Omaha area.
On April 29, 1972, Maureen was united in marriage to William Ranniger at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wall Lake, IA. They resided on a farm near Manning, IA, where she was a stay-at-home wife and mother to four children: Ryan, Beth, Michael, and Katie. They divorced in 1986, and Maureen moved with the children to Carroll, IA.
On June 17, 1988, Maureen was united in marriage to Thomas Vonnahme at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll, IA. The family resided on a farm near Vail, IA. A year later, a daughter, Maria, joined the family. Tom, Maureen, and their five children enjoyed living the farm lifestyle. Maureen was fondly called the “Egg Lady” in the community for delivering farm fresh eggs weekly to local customers and at the Farmer’s Market in Manning.
Maureen was a parishioner at St. Ann’s Church, where she was an Altar Society member and sang in the choir for 29 years. She served as a Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) leader at Sacred Heart Church in Manilla for 15 years and was a leader with the Crawford County Neighbors 4-H club for 20 years. Maureen was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Crawford County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. In recent years, Maureen enjoyed being a part of a local quilting club called the Saturday Sew Group.
One of Maureen’s favorite hobbies was sewing, and she later turned her passion into a business. She sewed and altered countless prom dresses, wedding dresses, and outfits for close family, friends, and neighbors. She enjoyed listening to music, especially Bruce Springsteen and George Strait, bowling, dancing, traveling, rodeos, camping, and gardening.
Maureen was preceded in death by her husband; her father; her in-laws, Clarence and Caroline Vonnahme; and two nephews, John Vonnahme and Steve Schulte. Survivors include: her children: Ryan of Waterloo, IA; Beth (Greg) of Dubuque, IA; Michael (Katherine) of Stillwater, MN; Katie (Joe) of Maryville, MO; Maria (Matt) of Ellston, IA; three grandchildren: Colin, Sophia, and Luke; her mother, Lois of Carroll IA; her siblings: Jean (Jerry) of Le Mars, IA; Jane (Ron) of Carroll, IA; Diane (Jeff) of Phoenix, AZ; Carolyn (Bob) of Omaha, NE; and Mary Ann (Gary) of Westside, IA; her in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
