Maurine Lois Holtorf was born September 7, 1921, in Charter Oak, Iowa, the daughter of Conrad and Ellen Aronson Carstens. She passed away Monday, May 6, 2019, at Denison Care Center at the age of ninety-seven.
Maurine received her education in the rural schools near her home and was united in marriage with Walter Holtorf at the Methodist Church in Charter Oak September 22, 1940. The couple was blessed with the birth of three children and the family made their home on a farm near Denison, Iowa. After retiring, they moved into Denison in 1965.
An avid Bridge and Pinochle player, Maurine played in several Bridge tournaments. She enjoyed socializing with other couples, dancing and taking cruises to Hawaii and Mexico. Her favorite television programs were polka shows and Lawrence Welk. Maurine showed her commitment to public service by her involvement with the “pink ladies” at the hospital and in the gift shop. In her leisure time, she enjoyed reading, health magazines, listening to KDSN and watching baseball. She loved to bake and cook, being especially remembered for her fried chicken and desserts. Maurine’s most memorable times were picnics with the family, the Carstens and Swede Aronson’s family.
Maurine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter; one son, Dennis, who was killed in Vietnam; one sister, Donna Mae; and two brothers Gale and Lawrence,who was killed at Pearl Harbor. Survivors include: one son, Jerry and partner, Irv; one daughter, Colleen and her husband, Charles; one grandson, Justin; two brothers, Bud and Jack; other relatives and friends.
