Maxine Mary Weinbrandt was born August 6, 1924, the daughter of Walter and Christine Grell Schurke. She passed away Saturday, November 23, 2013, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 89.
Maxine was born on a farm near Deloit, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ, May 10, 1925, by Rev. Richter in Denison, Iowa, and confirmed June 18, 1939, at St. John Lutheran Church in Kiron by Rev. Reith. She received her education in rural schools in Crawford County. On June 28, 1947, Maxine was united in marriage to Donald Weinbrandt at St. John Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township, Kiron, Iowa, and to this union was born four children. The couple farmed near Deloit until 1967 when they moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where Donald managed an apartment complex. In January 1986 the couple moved to Bryan, Texas, due to Donald’s declining health. Maxine moved back to Denison in 1986.
Maxine loved to socialize with family and friends and cook and bake for them, especially her delicious homemade bread and cinnamon rolls. She worked hard and raised a large garden every year. Going to area polka dances and playing Euchre or Pitch on Friday nights were some of her favorite activities as well as camping trips to Minnesota, horse shows, and attending the State Fair. Maxine liked to watch General Hospital, As The World Turns, and Ellen on television. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and a devoted member of Dorcas where she used her sewing talents and helped to sew quilts. Her handiwork also included embroidered pillowcases and sewing her children’s clothing when they were young.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Donald in 1986. Survivors include: three daughters, Marjorie Powell and her husband, Jim of Deloit; Elaine Babb and her husband, Travis of Carthage, Mississippi; Diane Morse and her husband, Terry of Michigan City, Indiana; one son, Reynold Weinbrandt and his wife, Barb of Davenport; eight grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Alice Johnson and her husband, Norman of Iowa Falls, Iowa; Lois Jay of Lone Tree, Colorado; and one brother, Donnie Schurke and his wife, Jeraldine of Denison; other relatives and friends.
