Merritt Jacob Comstock was born November 16, 1930, the son of Geary and Elizabeth Segebart Comstock. He passed away Sunday, June 2, 2013, at the Eventide Lutheran Nursing Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 82.
Merritt was born in Denison, Iowa. He received his education in rural schools near his home. After he finished his schooling, Merritt ran a bulldozer for Ted Staples Construction Company. In July 1951 Merritt joined the U.S. Air Force and served his country during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in July 1955. On September 18, 1956, Merritt was united in marriage to Junith Gunderson at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. The couple made their home near Arcadia and were blessed with the birth of three sons. Merritt worked for Green Construction Company and then a tile company from Lake View. He then bought his own truck and hauled milk, going from cans to bulk, picking up milk from farmers and delivering to the creamery. Merritt farmed from the early 1960s to mid 1980 when he retired.
Merritt was a quiet and gentle man. He took great care of his livestock and liked working with cattle in particular. He collected classical farm tractors. When he had spare time, he enjoyed fishing in the local farm ponds, going dancing, and listening to country music. He and Junith were long time members of a card club in their Odebolt neighborhood. Merritt loved spending time with his grandchildren and would help out when they needed to be picked up from daycare and school. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
Merritt was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Ruby Herrmann; Jean Deppe; and Lucille Vetter; and one brother, LeRoy Comstock. Survivors include his wife, Junith; three sons: Dan Comstock; Steve Comstock and special friend, Cheryl Rath; and Doug Comstock and his wife, Christi; all of Denison; three grandchildren, Tyler, Kaylee and Jacob Comstock; his mother-in-law, Zola Gunderson of Odebolt; one sister-in-law, Sharon Comstock of Arthur; and one brother-in-law, Duane Vetter of Denison; other relatives and friends.
