Mervin L. Fink

July 15, 1929 — August 27, 2014

Mervin L Fink was born July 15, 1929, the son of Eugene and Mildred Fink. He passed away Wednesday, August 27, 2014, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-five.
Mervin was born on a farm near Deloit, Iowa. Growing up in Crawford County, he attended schools near his home and the Denison Community High School, graduating there with the class of 1948. After completing his education, Mervin joined the U.S. Navy. After completing his military responsibilities, he returned to Crawford County, and was united in marriage to Lorena Beermann, May 3, 1953. The couple settled in Denison and were blessed with the birth of four children. He worked at B & M Motors for a time, before he started farming. For a short time he worked as a farm hand for his brother-in-law, Shorty. He then worked at IBP for several years before opening and managing the S&S store in Denison for 20 years. He was also the first Veteran’s Affairs van driver in Crawford County. After his retirement, he helped his son, Joel in the trucking business and also was the first Wal-Mart greeter in the Denison store.
He was confirmed in the Lutheran Faith on Christmas Day in 1953. For many years he was an active member of Zion; serving on the school board, Sunday school office, men’s club and was also an usher. His fondest hobby was woodworking, building furniture for his family and friends. He enjoyed fishing at Spring Lake and enjoyed a cabin at Lake View and Spirit Lake. Merv was especially fond of being with his family and did so enjoy his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He would attend many of their sporting events, especially baseball. Traveling to Colorado to visit his daughters was an event that he always looked forward to. He would often reminisce about his Navy years and was a great story teller. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who devoted his life to his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Joel; one infant great-grandson, Bryant; two brothers, Don and his wife, Katheryn; Chuck; brothers and sisters-law, Marge; Walt and Leone; Ed; Clarence; Joan; and Irene.
