Mervin Peter Wilehem Petersen was born March 8, 1935, at rural Deloit, Iowa, the son of Elvin and Violet Schwenn Petersen. He passed away Thursday, May 4, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, at the age of eighty-two.
Mervin received his elementary and high school education in schools near his home after which he was employed at Farmland and Iowa Beef Processors in Denison and subsequently was a long-time assembly line employee at Midwest Industries in Ida Grove. He also was a self-employed carpenter and a jack-of-all trades. On June 30, 1956, he was united in marriage to Verna Schultz and they were blessed with the birth of three children: Bruce, Brian and Eileen.
Caring for his lawn was a passion of his, being very specific about mowing to achieve the perfect lawn. He enjoyed fishing, gambling, westerns and dancing in his younger days but most recently just listening especially to polka music with the Peter Wendinger Band being his favorite. His family was very special to him with his grandchildren being the joy of his life.
Survivors include: his wife, Verna; two sons, Bruce and Brian; one daughter, Eileen and significant other, Paul; five grandchildren; one brother, Richard; one sister, Mary Ellen; two aunts, Irene and Eleanor; two sisters-in-law, Ruby and her husband, Clarence and Florence; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and friends.
