Myrl Edwin Hight was born January 17, 1920, at Royal, Nebraska, the son of Jesse and Lulu Russell Hight. He died Tuesday, December 20, 2016, at the Reed House in Denison, Iowa, at the age of ninety-six.
Myrl was born on a farm north of Neligh, Nebraska, and graduated from the 8th grade at a rural school near his home in Cedar County. He was baptized into Christ and confirmed on April 19, 1942, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Coleridge, Nebraska. He was united in marriage to Sylvia Marie Rathgeber on November 12, 1941, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church parsonage in Coleridge, Nebraska. They were blessed with the birth of seven children and recently celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on March 20, 1945, serving his country as a rifleman and was honorably discharged on December 10, 1945, when peace was declared. He was awarded a World War II Victory Medal.
Myrl farmed most of his adult life, first in the Laurel, Nebraska, area, then moved to Iowa in 1950 where he farmed near Glidden and Scranton. In 1967, they moved to a farm north of Schleswig, where he lived until he retired in 1980. Myrl and Sylvia moved into Schleswig in 1994, where they lived until moving to the Reed House in the fall of 2012.
Myrl and Sylvia loved spending their winters in Texas, which they did for 34 years. They loved to spend their time dancing, fishing, playing cards and spending time with family and friends. Myrl especially enjoyed the grandchildren when they were babies and he loved holding them on his lap. He was a member of the American Legion and served as an usher and elder at most of the churches they attended.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Irwin (Roy) and his wife Bernice, Russell and his wife Roena, and Neil and his wife Betty; five sisters: Edna Milligan and her husband Pete, Jessie Heck and her husband Harold, Vera Anderson and her husband Tom, Evolyn Rathgeber and her husband Emmett, Leola Erickson and her husband Martin; a son Carl in infancy; a daughter Patty Hight Lechtenberg; and a brother-in-law, Clarence Heck.
Survivors include: his wife, Sylvia; two sons: Leroy and his wife Marlene and Lyle and his wife Madeline; three daughters: Judy and her husband Dan, Violet and her husband Doug and Susan and her husband Ron; one son-in-in-law Rex and his wife Catherine; eighteen grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Elton and his wife Miriam; one sister, Darie; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
