Myrland Leroy Blunk was born August 3, 1941, the son of Carl and Velma Halterman Blunk. He died on Monday, August 16, 2010 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of sixty-nine.
Myrland was born in Kenwood, Iowa. He received his education at a rural school until seventh grade and then went to Dow City School for eighth grade. He was a very hard worker and after completing his education he began working at the Logan Rock Quarry and then as a farmhand.
On June 8, 1963, he was united in marriage to Carol Jean Carey in Nebraska. The couple made their home in Arion, then later moved to Dow City and were blessed with the birth of six children. He worked at the Denison Hide Cellar for several years. After the flood in 1993, they made their home in Denison, Iowa where he began working for the Denison Newspaper. He also worked part-time for Cogdill hauling anhydrous and loaded grain trucks in the fall. His final job was Security at Farmland Foods in Denison.
Myrland was known for his kind heart and how easy he was to get along with. He was a kid at heart and enjoyed the movie "The Wizard of Oz." If something was broke he would fix it with his trusty hammer and nail or coat hanger. Known as "Merly" he could always be found riding his lawnmower or watching "The Price is Right." He also enjoyed word searches and cutting up cardboard and burning it. He was baptized in the Christian faith and was confirmed as an adult on February 14, 1978 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Jean; one son, Ronald in infancy; two great-grandsons: Jeremiah and Isaiah; and one granddaughter, Valerie Anna Jean. Survivors include his children: Shirley; Karen and her husband Albert; Linda; Steve ; Barbara and her husband Kent; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; twelve step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandson; two brothers: William and his wife Donna; Roger and his wife, Karen; three sisters: Nelda; Orlene and her husband, Charles; Marleneand her husband, Michael; two brothers-in-law: Ronald; Lloyd ; four sisters-in-law: Jean; Elaine ; Jeanie ; and Arlene; other relatives and friends.
