On a warm summer evening, Gary and Pam Hall went to the hospital to have a baby. A few minutes before midnight, Nancy Meggin Hall was born in Red Oak, Iowa, on June 28, 1976. She was welcomed home by her older siblings, Ann, Dawn and Alan who were excited to have a new, baby sister. When Nancy was 14 months old, she became a big sister to Susan and they became the best of friends!
In December 1977, the Hall family moved to Harlan where Nancy started school and met some of her first friends. Nancy became a big sister again in 1986 to her cute little sister, Katie. Then in the summer of 1987 the Hall family moved to the Hall Family Farm in Manilla, where Nancy enjoyed growing up. Nancy became a big sister again in 1988 to her sweet baby brother, Steve.
Nancy’s teachers, Marcia Huey, Debbie Musfeldt, Mrs. Kohl, Kay Smith, Beth Hagedorn, Ann Bauer, Rhonda Christensen, and Shirley Hansen, had a huge impact on her life. Jay McLaughlin, Erin Berkley, Darlene Kelly, Katie Rasmussen, Jamie Sporrer, John Konekamp and Nancy enjoyed their classes and friendships!
Nancy attended IKM and graduated in 1997. Some highlights included going to prom escorted by her “good-looking” brothers-in-law, David and Doug, and her loving older brother, Alan. Nancy also enjoyed participating in the Special Olympics and competed in bowling, track and field and cheer. Throughout high school Nancy was involved in 4H and had fun showing hogs and doing other exhibits. The first time Nancy showed a pig she told her mom she didn’t want to hurt it. Her mom told her it was okay to tap it– it liked to know where to go. When Nancy got in the ring, she even noticed the judge was “cute!” Last summer she participated in “Bacon Buddies” at the Crawford County Fair where she loved having the chance to show a pig again. Thank you to the young man who made that special for Nancy.
Nancy went to the WESCO day program after high school and enjoyed working at HyVee in Denison for several years. In 2007 (after Steve went to college), Nancy and her dad fixed fences in the nearby cattle lot. She loved helping her mom bake cookies and always seemed to know when someone needed a back rub. She was such a good helper that genuinely cared for others. Fancy Nancy was kind, friendly and happy.
Her favorite things include EXERCISING!, the movies The Sound of Music and Dirty Dancing, crocheting (thanks to Shirley Hansen for taking the time to teach her), Diet Coke, coffee, iced tea, McFlurries, coloring, playing piano, dancing, reading, all 22 of her nieces and nephews– especially when they were babies and her family and friends. Grandma Phyllis McCone was also one of Nancy’s favorites. Grandma used to take Nancy to do fun things and even let her drive the car in the pasture.
In the last two weeks of Nancy’s life, her parents and siblings drove more than 2,400 miles to spend time with her and help take care of her in the hospital. When she passed, she had her hand on Dad’s face with Mom and sister, Ann, by her side. She was so special and loved–we know she felt the same.
Nancy is survived by her mother–Pam (McCone) Hall, her father–Gary Hall, her siblings, nieces and nephews–Ann (David- Josh, Zach) Getting, Dawn (Doug- Emma, Grace, JD, Job, Angela, Godwin) Vander Weide, Alan (Michele- Derek, Luke, Ashley, Aidan) Hall, Susan (Will- Gary, Fritz, Luke, Hank, Walt) Manda, Katie (Brandon Despins- Dash, Finn) Hall, Steven (Allison- Hannah, Charlotte, Heidi) Hall, great nieces and nephew (Bella, Jimmy, Lennie), her aunts–Anita (Hall and Yuri) Schilin and Patti (McCone) Muhlbauer, and many cousins. Nancy is preceded in death by her grandparents–Allen and Lee Hall, Dale and Phyllis McCone, her uncles and aunt–Dan Muhlbauer and Stan and Virginia McCone.
If you knew Nancy, consider yourself lucky to have heard her say, “I love you, honey”, “Don’t worry, be happy!” or “Don’t tell Mom”. We have appreciated all of the wonderful messages for our Fancy Nancy. Thank you for your lovingkindness.
