Norman Hummel was born July 9, 1934, the son of Harry and Elva Barber Hummel. He passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 77.

Norman was a member of the Army Reserves based out of Sioux City when he was called to active duty in 1954. He served in an outpost at the 138th parallel in Korea after the conflict had officially ended.

His professional life was associated often with the field of agriculture and always in the realm of service. He was employed working with agricultural chemicals with Pasch, Simonson Fertilizer, Terra, and farming for Dennis Bruhn, retiring in 1997 when he turned 62.
Norm was united in marriage to Phyllis (Molly) Stone on November 21, 1969, at the Lutheran Church in Wayne, Nebraska, and they were happily married for 42 years last November. Norm was a very kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig holding many offices through the years. Norm loved fishing, camping, and traveling. He also enjoyed good western movies, a game of cards or fast track with his family and friends. Norm took loving care of his blue-eyed Husky dog Tonya, his baby lambs, calves, and kittens while living on their acreage near Schleswig before moving into town. Due to health concerns they moved to an apartment in Denison.
