Orville Ray Steinkuehler was born April 25, 1925, the son of William and Ida (Hollander) Steinkuehler. He passed away Sunday, October 28, 2012, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 87.
Orville was born in Washington Township Dow City, Iowa. He farmed in the area as a youngster and entered the United States Army on January 26, 1945 where he was stationed in Japan. He received his honorable discharge on November 17, 1946. Orville was united in marriage to Katherine Dwine on September 25, 1947, and they had eight children. Orville worked at Eclipse Lumber until 1959 and then began working for the Iowa Department of Transportation until he retired in 1987. He also owned his own glass and window repair business and continued to do handyman projects as long as he was able.
Orville enjoyed his family and they took many fishing vacations to Spirit Lake and Madison, South Dakota. The family also camped and fished at Wood Acres near Nelsons Park and liked to go hunting together for pheasants, rabbits, and squirrels. Orville was a loving father but also firm as he raised his children. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing cards and trips to the casino.
Orville was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Katherine; one son, Douglas; one great-granddaughter, Reagen Schechinger, one sister, LaVerne Malone; five brothers: Reinhardt; Elmer; Alvin; Victor; and Donald; and one son-in-law, William Ettleman. Survivors include: three daughters: Linda Wood and her husband, Leo of Dow City; Pat Culver and her husband, Keith of Dunlap; Sheri Hast and her husband, Lynn of Dow City; four sons: Marty Dwine and his wife, Catherine of Denison; Steve Steinkuehler and his wife, Leslie of Prophetstown, Illinois; Jim Steinkuehler and his wife, Starla of Dow City, Iowa; and Joe Steinkuehler and his wife, Karen of Denison; one step-daughter, Joan Favro of Chehalis, Washington; one daughter-in-law, Sherry Steinkuehler of Marengo, Iowa; 22 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one sister, Tillie Grell of Sheldon, Nebraska, and special friend, Gwen DeMey of Dow City, Iowa; other relatives and friends.
