Phyllis Marie (Mahoney) Clausen was born on November 21, 1942, the daughter of Paul and Wilma “Vi” Viola Lewis (Mahoney) near Pisgah, Iowa. In 1951, her family moved to Schleswig, Iowa, where her father chose to relocate his trucking business. She was baptized and confirmed at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church, instilling in her a deep faith that would guide her throughout her life. After graduating from Schleswig School in 1960, she embarked on a journey defined by devotion and service.
On October 23, 1960, Phyllis married her soulmate, Leon Clausen, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Together, they embraced the challenges and joys of farm life, nurturing a family that became the center of their world. Phyllis and Leon were blessed with four children, and their unwavering support for their children’s and grandchildren’s activities became a hallmark of their family life. In 2014, they transitioned from their cherished farm to a new home in Schleswig, continuing to build lasting memories together.
Throughout her life, Phyllis grew in her relationship with the Lord and humbly served in many roles within the church and community. Whether teaching Sunday School, participating in the evening guild, or contributing to the library board, she brought warmth and kindness to every endeavor. Her quiet, sensitive, and friendly presence endeared her to all who crossed her path, and she provided her family with a beautiful example of loyalty and unconditional support.
